Hi Everyone

First post Cool

I am trying to choose my first dobsonian telescope but there seems to be two types, struts and tubular. Probably not the correct terminology. Rolling Eyes

Are there any differences between the two, will a struts dob get affected by light pollution more?

Thanks in anticipation

Hey jstew

I am pretty new to astronomy myself but as no one has replied yet I thought I might see if I can help out.

In my opinion the important differernce between the two is a strut or truss dob is more portable than a tube dob. This means you can get a bigger apature scope more easily to those dark sky sites.

On the down side (and as you rightly point out) I read somewhere that a truss dob lets in light from other sources such as street lights etc. that diminishes the quality of the image you see in the eyepiece. If you are observing in the city or suburbs this might be an issue but if you are observing in dark sky sites then light pollution is not going to be a problem.

Sheaths can be made/purchased that securely wrap around the length of the trusses to keep out that excessive light.

Hope this helps!

Thanks rusty,

I took the plunge and purchased a tubular dobsonian. I take your point about portability however the tubular seemed a little less exposed to accidents. As it is kept in the living room this was a concern, kids, cat etc.

Although I haven't tried yet I am confident that it will fit accross my car's back seats so I am happy Very Happy

In the end I came to the conclusion that I could ponder and way up the pros and cons of every scope and in about 5 years buy one. Or I could just go with my gut and start enjoying the night sky.

Cheers
