A big Aussie hello to my fellow dob owners.
I have just joined the forum, having seen the light (or joined the forces of darkness, depending on your view of the world) by trading in my 10"SCT for a 20" truss dob. I am patiently waiting for delivery of my new scopes, which is being made by SDM telescopes (www.sdmtelescopes.com.au).
My reason for changing over is sheer aperture envy. Recently I had the chance to do some observing through a 20" obsession clone, and it so blew me away that I knew I would be restless until I changed over. IN particular, I have been amazed with how much more detail can be seen in familiar objects. It truly is like discovering those objects again like the first time.
I am a lawyer, specialising in litigation in the areas of employment, commercial law and disputed estates. I find astronomy is the perfect foil to the pressure of legal practice. At night I do not have to account for every 6 minutes of my day, I can indulge my senses and get some perspective on life.
I have a wife and three kids (8,5 and 3) and a poodle.
I am very involved in an observing group whom I met throught the Australian internet forum Ice In Space (www.iceinspace.com.au). You must visit the site when you have a spare 30 minutes, you will be amazed the depth of knowledge and genuine communty that exists there. As a result of that forum, we now run star parties every month, with a long weekend starparty every year, which may get about 200 this coming January.
I look forward to being part of this community devoted to dobs!

Hello Rodstar,
I too am from Australia - but not NSW - Victoria.
Hope that we can perhaps bounce some ideas off each other to get the best out of our telescopes.

G'day Robmac_melb!
What sort of scope do you have? Do you observe much with other people? If so, what group(s) are you a member of?
What issues are currently plaguing your observing? _________________ 20 inch SDM truss style dobsonian with Argo Navis, triple Moonlite focuser and Moonlite filter slide, Skywatcher ED80 on EQ3-2 mount |
