hello everybody, i just stumbled upon this website by pure chance while searching for the best dobsonian telescope for me (it has been an ongoing search over the last 4 months) and decided it would be a good idea to join. i have never owned a telescope before but have always been keen and interested in astronomy and recently began star gazing to learn constelations and such and decided a 10" dobsonian is for me but am having trouble deciding which one would be best. unfortunately i live in kent and after weeks of searching there are no local astronomy clubs for me to go and try scopes for myself. if anyone has any advice or info on telescopes or astronomy clubs in the southeast kent area it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance and hello again

ORION 10" Intelliscope

Welcome to the group.
May I suggest the telescope I use which is the US made Orion 10" Intelliscope. ,
They make a larger 12" aperture Intelliscope now (which they didn't at the time) and that must be tempting. Especially as it has some rudimentary tracking. But I couldn't carry that size of instrument. It wasn't the weight but the base diameter that is critical to lifting without excessive bending. The 10" is an ideal compromise. Once I even lugged it 40 metres to a particular garden location; really the pedestrian limit without using a skateboard.
My Intelliscope benefits from a red dot reflex finder mounted with Evo-Stik Impact adhesive close to the standard finder. A laser light pen held against the focuser base plate allows quicker aiming to a sky region.
A couple of lithium filled night glow key fobs (blobbed on with Blue-Tak) prevent visitors colliding with the OTA in the dark.
No disadvanteges apart from the hopeless Orion Barlow Shorty that is included.

If you want a scope that's good value for money and you dont want to take long exposures of deep space objects then a Dob is the way forward and a 10" skywatcher flex tube with auto tracking is easy to use, even more portable than a normal dob and beginner friendly. Remember the old adage " The best scope for you is the one you use the most" it's very true.
I would suggest buying the book "Turn Left at Orion" which wil give you a good introduction to the subject as well as a useful chapter on which scope to buy.

Good luck and clear skies:)
