Hello all, just found the site and had to join.

Another proud owner of a cannon here, all be it a smaller one, an 8" skywatcher. I've had it for about 18 months, previously in a very light polluted area but I moved at the beginning of the year and now have very dark skies on clear nights. So my passion is back and I'm starting to work my way up the messier list.

I love the 8" (I will go up to a 16" at some point though). I've only made a few mods to it, nothing complicated as I like to keep things simple. I added a rotarey angle encoder for Azimuth, and use a wixey for Alt. I'll get a right Angle finder scope soon and I've put some wheels on the base to increase the height of the EP, which along with a diagonal has made viewing far more comfortable for us taller users.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. Smile

Hi there!

We're not a very vociferous lot but don't let that put you off.

I admire your obvoius enthusiasm and drive and would love to know how you overcome the British Astronomer's malaise of clouds at new moon and clear skies (like last night - 8/4/09) at full moon? The first clear night for weeks and it was a total washout!

Let me show my ignorance (I'm a newbie, too): what on Earth's a "wixey". I know about a waxey but not a wixey.???

I struggle with a 10" dob I made myself and am currently remaking the tube but in 4mm ply rather than the cardboard tube version that's so popular. The weight is less than half but the carpentry's a bit fiddly, however, I'm persevering.

Best of luck with Messier

Clear, dark skies

Bryan
